It has been a while since Canon’s EOS 450D’s release and now Canon announced its successor – EOS 500D (also known as Kiss X3 Digital or Digital Rebel T1i) some time ago.
Well of course, they have beefed up the specs and add on some lovely features. Lets take a look …
I have been using my good old Powershot S5 for a long time and I yearn to learn on using a DSLR . The specs, as compared to 450D got me “whoaaa”
- 15.1 megapixel sensor
- Supports Video Recording @ 720p 30fps, 1080p 20fps (Quicktime mov h.264)
- High ISO up to 3200and extends up to H1 (6400) and H2 (12,800)
- Continuous Drive mode @ 3.4 fps up to 170 JPEG
- Digic 4
- Anti reflective VGA screen
- Features Face Detect in Live View (what..is it tapping into prosumer/PNS range?)
- Auto Lighting Optimizer
- 25 user languages available in menu
The price of it ? Should be a tentative USD 899 and should be available in May. (just in time before the next IT show huh?)

I have a 450D and I have been wishing for a video recording function…
@老猫
time for u to sell now ? :P heh
Well, if you have the surplus money then hoot dah.
DSLRs are very expensive and need maintenance. Also the provided kit lens is not enough for serious photography but it depends on skill also.
The Canon EOS 500D provides that “upper middle class” platform for those who just want to have the “bragging rights” of “mine is better than yours”. Looking at their specs, the price is does not justify the purchase (SGD1,400 if you give and take currency fluxes).
Granted, the specs are something to drool for, but given the upgrade in the processor meant that it can take on higher ISO, it’s a justifiable upgrade.
The movie recording function will make consumers who wanted a little bit of extra on their DSLR happy. Otherwise, it inheriting the likes of 5D Mark II is just saying that the D90 inherited the Nikon D3/D300 specs.
Overall, I’m still satisfied with my 450D, even though the noise levels are strictly limited. The 500D is a worthy buy for those who’ve dabbled in prosumer camera for quite a long time, and are wishing that they could find a reason to upgrade their camera to a DSLR. For users like me, who already own an EOS 450D, the only “true” upgrade for us is to either upgrade to a 5D Mark II or higher.
I was temped when I first found out that it did HD video but then I read the specs and found out that at 30fps it only does 720p. Oh well give them a couple more years and well get 20+ megapixels with 1080i for the same price. That the nice thing about digital. Better faster cheaper each year. Which of course is also the bad thing about digital.
