In a recent audition of American Idol, Mere Doyle who self proclaims she is an otaku which is another word for Anime Freak. No..wait… IS Otaku An Anime Freak ? Well, that what’s she said in the video above. Of course, she was rejected by the judges in which I personally think was being as kind to her as Simon Cowell could have said harsher words of reality.
Well, good try Doyle but I have to disagree that an otaku is an anime freak.

I don’t know if I’d call her otaku, but I think her defininition is perfect. Otaku, whether they really are, or they just think they are, are strange, and there’s no denying it.
Which is why I refrain from using the term, especially refering to myself. :|
I honestly can’t stand americans who call themselves otaku I mean c’mon she wants to sing and make it big in japan. She is 14 and passionate but americans aren’t otaku she is a weeaboo lol.
Idk guess I’m angry because american anime fans get shown as a bunch of weird people
My ears… my eyes… aaah what a shame! I hate these Idol Shows. Misleading the people more and more.
wow… just… wow…
she reminds me of a classmate who made a BIG deal over ANYTHING, manga. (come to think of it, she also thought she could sing well, but couldn’t and was always out of key.)
notice how when people are rejected, they make things up. see how she said that they called her a clown? Show me where they said that.
That was ridiculous. She was a terrible singer to boot.
No offense to her, but she did give a really bad image about people who like anime… People who watched that are now going to have the impression that everyone who likes anime is like that -__-; So misleading…
Although with all that she was saying about how she was an “otaku” and how much time they were putting into that, I was kind of expecting her to sing an opening to an anime or something…
thank you I am happy someone said that and I agree 100%
otaku is just an other word for someone that really into something…It just like saying your a geek or a nerd… Being an Otaku is like being a DND player in highschool
She was a freaking idiot. A disgrace. Telling the whole world that you are an otaku on camera is just dumb, and failing to realize it goes to show how stupid she really is. She gave wrong impressions to the world, concerning people who watch anime/reads manga. She also proclaims she’s an otaku but in-fact she’s just a fucking weaaboo. I literally started to feel sick while watching her on TV. I’m like: “just stop you moron, goddamn weaaboo”. Make Kimono’s? Draw Doujinshi’s? Go to Japan and be a hit musician there? How’s she going to be a musician there? Sing in Japanese with her most-likely shit accent? Sing in English? Yeah, right. It’s JAPAN. O.M.G grow a brain.
I’m relieved she got rejected. I think I might have puked if she had gone through to the next round, seriously.
And with her “I spend my time making kimonos and selling them etc.etc.” You’d think she’d learn how to actually tie the kimono bows instead of just wrapping a line of cloth around and tying a knot at the back.
Well, after hundreds of auditions and not making it anywhere, is that too big of a hint that she doesn’t have any talent? Her mother should spare her the agony and stop taking her to auditions to baby her daughter into believing she could make it in the industry. Such a joke.

(taken from urban dictionary)
In America, the term is used to denote a zealous fan, usually of anime and/or manga. Due to its introduction to most people’s vocabulary through its tongue-in-cheek use in Gainax’s film, “otaku” tends to have a much less dire definition overseas.
When dealing with Japanese people, however, it may be best to keep in mind the modern Japanese image of an otaku — Someone who only leaves their home to eat or shop, if at all, with an overwhelming and unhealthy obsession about something. It can as easily refer to a stalker or sociopath as it can to a harmless anime buff.
Best to avoid the word altogether if one is not sure of the context in which it will be received.
Realized that it is probably not a good idea to call yourself an otaku. Especially if you go to Japan.
