From what I know of the Anime Palace dealer you mentioned selling the DVD's is actually from Virginia. He may have a franchise in Madison, though I've not heard of him here. Since the convention has a strict policy against bootlegging, then only DVD's you'll find here are going be the same ones you can find in major retailers. You might be able to find imported DVD's from Japan, which would sell for at least $80. Anyone selling an "imported (Japanese) DVD" for less than that, and their actually pushing some kind of bootleg. Other than that, swords, wallscrolls, figures, hats, and totes are what a lot of people go for in dealers rooms. Anime Fan Zone also looked like it was selling some animation cells, too.
The layout for the room was cramped, but this was also the first time in a hotel and as a pay-to-attend even, so there's going to be kinks to work out. There was a lot of stuff to do, just not many anime panels. If people want more panels of a certain genre, then they need to volunteer to run them (a model most anime cons use). Steampunk is rapidly overtaking anime in popularity, so there's generally a major push for costuming now. I would like to add the LAN and Tabletop gaming rooms were also very popular. Not many RPG's though. Again something people need to volunteer to run.
Sorry you had a less than stellar experience.
